Tally: a free Splitwise alternative that splits by income

October 17, 2026 · 4 min read

Tally is a shared expense ledger for couples, housemates, families and trips. Add what you spent, choose how to split it, and Tally keeps track of who owes whom. It's free, it has no ads, and there's no limit on how many expenses you add in a day.

Splitwise made this kind of app popular, but its free plan now limits how many expenses you can add each day and shows ads, while features like receipt scanning and itemized splits need Pro. Tally was built to do the everyday splitting for free, and to handle the case Splitwise doesn't: sharing costs fairly when people earn different amounts.

What Tally does

Example: Ana earns 60,000 a month and Ben earns 40,000. With an income-based split, a 20,000 rent bill becomes 12,000 for Ana and 8,000 for Ben, and Tally updates the shares if either income changes.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Free, with no ads and no daily expense limit
  • Income-based splits for couples and housemates who earn different amounts
  • Itemized splits and multiple payers at no cost
  • Tracks your accounts and credit cards, not just who owes whom
  • Hands-off logging from receipts, statements and bank SMS through Claude or Gemini, and nothing is filed without your OK
  • CSV export and an open API

Cons

  • Not in the App Store or Play Store: the Android app is a direct download, and there's no native iPhone app yet
  • Google sign-in only, and everyone in a group needs an account
  • No automatic currency conversion between currencies
  • No bank sync or Venmo/PayPal settle-up
  • Automatic receipt reading needs an AI assistant that supports custom connectors
  • A young, independent project with a smaller community than Splitwise

Who Tally is for

Tally works well for couples and housemates who share bills every month, especially if you earn different amounts and want a fair split without doing the maths. It also suits anyone who logs a lot of small expenses and keeps hitting Splitwise's daily limit, and people who want their own budget and the group's balances in one app. If your group travels across currencies and needs automatic conversion, or settles up through Venmo, Splitwise is still the better fit.
